General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)

When were they available?

GCSEs were introduced in 1988 and are currently taken by 16 year olds in schools but may also be taken by adults.

Where would I have studied?

GCSEs are taken by 16 year olds in school and also by 16-19 year olds and adultsĀ  in further education (FE) colleges; adult and community learning (ACL) centres as part time courses.

How would I have been assessed?

GCSEs are usually studied over a 2 year period with assessment being a combination of course work and examination.

What result would I have achieved?

Grades A*-C are deemed to be equivalent to level 2 and can be used to evidence personal skills.

Awarding bodies offering GCSEs are; AQA, CCEA, EDEXCEL, OCR and WJEC.
