When were they available?

Certificates of Secondary Education (CSEs) were available in schools in England from 1965 – 1987.

Where would I have studied?

At secondary school or further education (FE) college.

How would I have been assessed?

Assessment by end of year examination.

What result would I have achieved?

A Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) awarded by one of 14 local awarding bodies; a list of ‘old’ awarding bodies can be found on the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) website.

A grade 1 in CSE is equivalent to an O level pass therefore can be counted as evidence of level 2 personal skills in literacy or numeracy.
