Qualifications for teachers of English (Literacy and ESOL) and Mathematics (Numeracy) in the lifelong learning sector in England

When were they available?

The following specialist teaching qualifications have been available since September 2007:

  • Additional diplomas in teaching English (literacy or ESOL) and mathematics (numeracy) in the lifelong learning sector
  • Diplomas in teaching English (literacy or ESOL) and mathematics (numeracy) in the lifelong learning sector.

Where would I have studied?

Additional diplomas and diplomas are usually taken in further education (FE) colleges, universities or professional development units (PDU).

How would I have been assessed?

The level 5 additional diplomas can be taken part time as a stand alone qualification which is usually 120 hours with 75 hours teaching practice.

The integrated diplomas can be taken pre or in service, full or part time. The diploma has 120 credits, a minimum of 360 hours and requires 150 hours of teaching practice.

What result would I have achieved?

The additional diplomas are for those teachers who wish to become literacy, numeracy or ESOL specialists. Assessment is by assignment and teaching observations.

The integrated diplomas combine a generic teacher training qualification with a subject specialist programme. Assessment is by assignment and teaching observations.

There is a level 3 personal skill entry requirement, in the relevant subject, to these qualifications.

They are accredited by awarding bodies and higher education institutions.
