Evidencing personal skills in literacy and numeracy

This page provides links to the lists of approved qualifications for evidencing personal skills in literacy and numeracy. This is a mandatory element of the professional formation process of the Institute for Learning (IfL), enabling a teacher to gain licensed practitioner status. A process for evidencing personal skills in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is being considered for the future.

The terms literacy and numeracy are those used in the 2007 FE regulations. However, it is recognised that some acceptable qualifications will have English/communication or mathematics/maths in their titles, and this is reflected within the listings. Any listed qualification may be used as evidence, irrespective of the date of achievement or current availability.

To assist teachers in establishing whether their personal qualifications meet the criteria for approved qualifications, descriptors are also provided outlining characteristics such as how, when and where qualifications may have been achieved.

The current lists were approved in September 2008, but will be subject to periodic review to ensure that they remain fit for purpose.

For further information see the document titled Evidencing Personal Skills in Literacy and Numeracy: Guidance to Teachers and Employers (September 2008) on the Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) website. Further information on the process of professional formation is available on the IfL website.

Please note, for the purposes of content provided within this section the term 'teacher' has been used generically to represent teachers, tutors, trainers, lecturers and instructors in the further education (FE) sector.
