Level 4 or 5 Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL subject specialists

When were they available?

Level 4 or 5 Adult Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL subject specialist qualifications have been available since September 2002.

They have been replaced by level 5 Additional diplomas in teaching English (literacy and ESOL) and mathematics (numeracy) in September 2007.

Where would I have studied?

The qualifications were available in further education (FE) colleges and higher education institutions (HEI) taken by teachers wishing to become Skills for Life subject specialists.

How would I have been assessed?

Delivered as 90 hour courses, generally taken part time plus 30 hours teaching practice and assessed through assignments and portfolio.

What results would I have achieved?

The level 4 qualifications are generally called Certificates (for Adult Literacy or Numeracy or ESOL subject specialist) and level 5, Diploma (for Adult Literacy or Adult Numeracy).

Both included development of personal skills in literacy and/or numeracy within the programme of study.
