Referee FAQs

As a referee, do I have to do anything prior to writing the reference? You should read the Guidance for Referees document to ensure you know what is expected. The documents are route specific - please make sure you have the relevant version.

What is the role of the referee in the GPRLS process?
It is to support the applicant by providing an accurate and detailed statement presenting evidence of a competent practitioner committed to facilitating learning and continuing professional development.

How long should my reference be?
The references provide commentary on areas including those not covered by the applicant. Accurate, informed, and robust statements amounting to between 2 and 3 sides of A4 have effectively supported applications in previous submissions.

On which of the domain areas do I need to comment?
Referees must comment on all six of the domain areas as described in the new overarching professional standards for teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector.

Once I have completed the reference, am I expected to provide any other support?
There is no obligation to provide further support. However, an unsuccessful applicant may wish to discuss with you the area(s) of the application in which they have not met the criteria and seek support in compiling additional evidence in order to re-submit.

Is there any source of support that either the referee or the applicant can access?
Please see the Points for Consideration section on this website. Additionally, for professional and confidential advice you could contact Lifelong Learning UK's Information and Advice service on 0300 303 1877 or e-mail advice@lluk.org.

I do not meet the criteria for referees yet there is no other suitable referee, what is the next step?
The applicant should contact the GPRLS team by telephone: 0113 241 0435 or by sending an e-mail detailing the issues to recognition@svuk.eu. Situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
