Professional Recognition Learning and Skills Scheme for Skills for Life Teachers (PRLS)

SVUK administered the Professional Recognition Learning and Skills Scheme for Skills for Life Teachers (England), which enabled competent and experienced teachers to be recognised as qualified members of the workforce.

Information about the scheme, which has now been replaced by the General Professional Recognition Learning and Skills scheme (GPRLS), is provided below.

* A small number of applications in each subject area were returned unprocessed for reasons such as: received after the deadline; incomplete; concerns over authenticity of material. 

Characteristics of unsuccessful PRLS applications:

  • did not actually teach Skills for Life classes - ESOL, literacy or numeracy
  • failed to provide sufficient evidence against the requirements
  • had not chosen/advised referees appropriately
  • did not have a recent record of continuous professional development related to their subject specialism
  • did not provide evidence of reflective practice
  • failed to address one or more of the tasks
  • did not demonstrate a sufficiently high level of personal written/numerical skills

Characteristics of successful PRLS applications:

  • demonstrated consistent and regular professional development
  • were able to pinpoint their own contribution to a department's good inspection grades, and retention/achievement of learners
  • demonstrated application of knowledge and skills
  • showed that they had a strong learner-centred approach and successful learners
  • gave examples drawn from personal experiences
  • provided clear evidence supporting statements about knowledge, understanding and practice
